UPS invests 40 million in a new logistics center in Barcelona: The logistics giant UPS will open a new logistics center in Barcelona in the coming weeks to boost its business in Spain. The multinational has invested 40 million euros in the project. “It is one of the largest investments made by our company in the country”, highlights Elisabeth Rodríguez, UPS CEO for Spain and Portugal since June 2019.
With this new facility, the company intends, he says, to support local companies and communities in their exports. “Trade with the EU accounts for 67% of Spanish exports and the strategic location of this center in the Port of Barcelona, near El Prat airport and the French border, will encourage local companies seeking to expand their portfolio of customers [to Europe], as the new hub will make cross-border sales as easy as local shipping ”.
The directive, which points out that Spain is an important market for UPS Europe, underlines that the new center will allow customers to connect “in a more efficient way with their international customers. From there will be European road shipments, as well as international shipments that pass through our Cologne air hub “.
The center will open in time for this year’s peak shipping season, which kicks off on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, ahead of the Christmas campaign.

The facility covers an area of more than 24,000 m² and has a sorting capacity of up to 22,000 packages per hour, more than 2.5 times the capacity of the current Barcelona facilities of the company to be replaced. When operations begin, employees will be transferred little by little from the current warehouse in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat to the new center. “We have more than 300 employees in these facilities in Barcelona,” he continues.
Rodríguez also highlights that the new facility will show UPS’ commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its operations. Thus, it ensures that it is the first installation of the company in Europe certified to comply with LEED energy efficiency standards. Built by Cilsa-Zal Port, Port de Barcelona and Merlin Properties, it uses state-of-the-art package sorting technology that allows cutting energy consumption and photovoltaic panels, installed on the roof, which will reduce the amount of electricity extracted from the grid. , as detailed by the multinational.
The American company, present in 220 countries, landed in Spain in 1990, through the acquisition of Cualladó, and today it has a workforce of 1,200 employees and 22 operating parcel facilities in Spain, including more than 40,000 m² of storage. The company is very focused in Spain on SMEs, which it assures it wants to help in their international trade, and in electronic commerce, now strongly driven by the pandemic.
“Digitization has been key in the growth of SMEs in Spain and electronic commerce that was already emerging as an upward trend (according to the CNMC, in 2019 it grew by 23.9% in its business volume). gained a fundamental weight in recent months, “they point out from the corporation.
The new UPS centre in Barcelona is part of a series of projects that the real estate company Cilsa is developing in a new 270,000 m² logistics park in the Zal Port of Barcelona, together with more than 920,000 m² of logistics warehouses in the main Logistics Zone from Barcelona. According to Alfonso Martínez, CEO of Zal Port, “with the incorporation of UPS to our portfolio, the Zal Port will become the most important logistics development in southern Europe, bringing together all the world leaders in the logistics sector.”
